There is no single national price for non-emergency medical transportation. Cost depends on trip distance, transportation type, the assistance the passenger needs and when the ride takes place.
A passenger who can walk to and from a vehicle may need only ambulatory transportation. A wheelchair passenger may need a lift- or ramp-equipped vehicle. Someone who cannot safely travel seated may require stretcher transportation and additional assistance.

Distance statistics include only requests with a usable route distance. Pricing comparisons include only requests with enough provider-price information for comparison.

How NEMT pricing works
Non-emergency medical transportation is not priced exactly like a taxi or rideshare. Distance matters, but the vehicle, equipment and amount of assistance can have just as much effect on price.
MedicalRide considers the trip details you provide to create an estimated private-pay transportation price.
Base trip cost
Most trips have a minimum cost because the provider must supply a suitable vehicle and driver even for a short ride. A five-mile medical transport trip therefore does not necessarily cost half as much as a ten-mile trip.
Mileage
After the initial trip allowance, longer distances generally increase the estimate. For long-distance transportation, mileage becomes a much larger portion of the total cost.
Vehicle and mobility needs
Ambulatory transportation generally needs less specialized equipment than wheelchair, bariatric or stretcher transportation. The vehicle must match the passenger's actual needs.
Level of assistance
Curb-to-curb service usually requires less staff assistance than door-to-door, door-through-door or bed-to-bed service. Stairs, lifting and two-person assistance may require more equipment or personnel.
Timing
Same-day requests, nights, weekends and holidays may affect availability and pricing. Scheduling in advance gives providers more time to plan the trip.
Waiting time
Some trips require a driver to wait during an appointment. Short waits may be included, while longer waiting periods may affect the final provider price.

Private-pay wheelchair transportation generally costs more than an ordinary car ride because the vehicle must safely accommodate the passenger and wheelchair.
Price can depend on route distance, manual or power wheelchair, accessibility, stairs, assistance, waiting time, round-trip requirements and timing. A short local trip can therefore have a very different price from a 75-mile hospital transfer.

Scheduled transportation
How much does ambulatory medical transportation cost?
Ambulatory transportation is generally for passengers who can walk or transfer with little or no physical assistance but still need scheduled, non-emergency transportation.
It may be used for appointments, dialysis transportation, rehabilitation, outpatient procedures, recurring treatment or hospital discharge transportation.

Non-emergency stretcher transportation usually costs more than ambulatory or wheelchair transportation because it requires specialized equipment and often additional assistance.

One-way versus round-trip NEMT pricing
A round trip does not always cost exactly twice as much as a one-way trip. A provider may coordinate both portions efficiently, especially when the return time is known.
Scheduled return pickup: the provider leaves and returns at an agreed time.
Driver waits: the vehicle remains available during the appointment. Long waits can affect the final cost, so state whether the driver should wait or return later.

Short-distance versus long-distance medical transportation
For a short local trip, the minimum cost of providing the appropriate vehicle and driver can represent a significant part of the price. As distance grows, mileage becomes a larger component.
Long-distance NEMT may support rehabilitation transfers, trips between cities, hospital discharges, family relocations and specialized care.

Why isn't NEMT priced like Uber or a taxi?
NEMT providers may need specialized vehicles, accessibility equipment and assistance that ordinary rideshare and taxi services do not provide.
A wheelchair provider may need to operate a lift-equipped vehicle, secure the wheelchair, assist the passenger and accommodate a power chair or scooter. Stretcher and bariatric trips can require still more equipment and personnel.
That is why comparing NEMT solely by mileage can be misleading.
